Cristina Garcia, CEO/Founder

Cristina Garcia has a decade-long career in the California State Legislature, where she represented the 58th Assembly District in Southeast Los Angeles from 2012 to 2022.

Cristina’s leadership has significantly impacted marginalized communities, promoting economic equity, social justice, and environmental sustainability.

Key Areas of Expertise

Champion for policies on waste management, pollution reduction, renewable energy, and green technology adoption.

Garcia's legislative work includes the pioneering AB 617, aimed at reducing toxic pollution in vulnerable communities, helping to negotiate 2017's reauthorization of Cap & Trade. She played a key role in reforming the State Department of Toxic Substances Control and helped secure the 2022 Climate Change package, including her on bill AB 1757 on Natural Working Lands.

 

Led the California Legislative Women’s Caucus, advocating for gender equity, healthcare, childcare, and economic security.

Garcia has also been a leading voice in addressing period poverty, authoring laws to eliminate the tax on menstrual products and ensuring their free availability in schools and public colleges through AB 367.

During her tenure, the caucus grew to an unprecedented 50 members, marking the largest it has ever been. Currently she has spearheaded their campaign to grow the caucus to 58 members, nearly parity.

Played a key role in repealing the sales tax on menstrual products and updating the legal definition of rape.

She authored AB 756 (2019), mandating California public water systems monitor for PFAS, and AB 1857 (2022), addressing environmental justice by reducing harmful incinerator emissions in vulnerable communities. Garcia's budget advocacy secured hundreds of millions for cleaning hazardous sites, including the Exide Technologies facility, linked to widespread lead contamination. She also passed legislation permitting human composting, positioning California as a leader in eco-friendly burial practices.
